Info For You

When building an Earthship, 'cause that's what we're talking about here, you do need to consider a few things, of course.

Table of Contents

Permits

I know that getting any permit in Holland is hard.
In Holland we want everything to be nice and tight. We give a architect free reign so he can get a woody when a project is finished.
And it looks really good when it's finished, but I wouldn't want to live in it.., way to sterile.

So if you want anything out of the ordinary, you'd probably wouldn't get a permit. Because it wouldn't fit in.
I also read that the use of gray water in some US states is illegal. These kind of things can hinder you plans considerably.

Weather

An Earthship can be build anywhere. Hot or cold, the design is such that a moderate temperature can be kept all year round without extra heating or cooling.
So you can build it anywhere in the world, where you'd want to live, of course.

Country

Most people will try and build in their native country, it is the easiest thing to do, the language, the rules, the people…
If you do want to live in another country, like us, you'll need to visit it first. It sounds obvious, but many people buy a house abroad without ever seeing it, or having been in the area. Try and live there for a while, this would be ideal. As with every big change.., research must be done…

Money

Although you can minimize your utility bill, or even reduce it to zero, you'd still need to buy the property and build the house.
A lot of recycled materials are used, which cost next to nothing, but there will be costs.
Make sure you can make money, one way or another, somewhere in the area where you decide you want to live.
